Wedding Day

Day 5

Blah blah blah

A day off the bike and it is glorious. We sleep over ten hours and are thankful for it. Nan and her sister visit and I spend the morning working, resloving an issue that has been hanging over my head for the entire week.

We leave for the wedding at 2:00 p.m. so that we can avoid some traffic. It is not too far away, being at the Olympic View Golf Course and we get there in plenty of time. The ceremony is held on the practice putting green and I am slightly distressed about the heel marks but they must be used to it. The reception is a fun affair and there is a definite theme to it with a "candy station" in one corner and a photo booth near by. Apparently, there was some concern about whether or not these things were necessary but it is clearly a hit with the guests. As soon as the doors to the banquet room open, people have checked out their assigned tables and picked up the little candy bags there and taken them over to the candy station, where there is a wide variety of old fashioned and current candy. The photo booth is equally fun; it's a take on the camera-on-the-table idea but more novel and fun. Lots of people get in the booth as couples or groups; what they do not know is that all the pictures taken are being saved on a memory disk for the bride and groom. No doubt somebody will be embarrassed (when their risque photos appear on Facebook)!

The groom Justin's wee baby brother 6'4" Fielding is the Best Man for the wedding. Field and his lovely girlfriend Deanna have just had a baby about two months ago and they are toting baby Finlay around at the reception. It is all very exciting because he is the first grandchild in the family plus, he is our first grand-nephew. In fact, I am quite certain I heard him say "Uncle How". Anyway, about 30 seconds before it was my turn to hold him, he promptly filled his diapers. And I don't mean with candy. Fortunately for me, he was being held at that time by one of his great aunties who had raised kids and knew exactly what to do: give the kid back to his parents. Lo and behold, in the excitement of getting ready to go to the wedding, reinforcement diapers got omitted from the car filled with baby stuff.

I know, you are thinking "no big deal". Afterall, what does it take to just run out and get some diapers? Well, the Best Man traditionally gives a toast at the reception and Fielding's turn is rapidly approaching plus, Deanna wants to watch this proud moment. They are standing outside the banquette room hastily considering their options, which appear to be few.

At that same moment, off the golf course walks Chancho (I think that must be his nickname) a friend of the family they had met in Costa Rica. He screams in glee as he spots the stressed parents and says he is so glad to see them and wants to get them a baby gift. Field offers to let him get them a baby gift that very minute and away Chancho goes to find diapers. Problem solved.

It is a fun wedding and it is fun to be around young people. The bride and groom all have good, close friends and it is a pleasure to witness them interact. They are all going to Tofino after the wedding and there is a part of us that is longing to be part of that but we have our own adventures to live.
